The project
This unique conservation project gives you the chance to actively protect sea turtles along the Pacific coast of Mexico. You’ll work closely with a team of local biologists and other international volunteers to support critical conservation tasks during the nesting season.
During August and September, sea turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs. Volunteers will work from 20:00 to 08:00, either every night or on a rotating shift (one night on, one night off) depending on how many turtles come ashore. Weekends are kept for resting.
Key tasks include:
Locating adult turtles and carefully collecting their eggs
Moving eggs to a protected hatchery area (known as a Vivero)
Releasing new-born turtles safely into the ocean
Patrolling beaches overnight
Supporting maintenance of important turtle conservation camps in the area
Please note that the exact schedule can change depending on weather conditions and turtle activity. If turtle work is limited, especially in January or February and you may help with crocodile conservation work instead. The camp leader will provide daily updates and guidance.
Accommodation & food
You will stay in a shared room with another volunteer. Basic accommodation is provided and all meals are included.
Location & leisure
The project is based in Rincón de Guayabitos, a small beach town in the state of Nayarit, located within the stunning Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range and overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
This area is part of the Riviera Nayarit, known for its vibrant nature, relaxed lifestyle, and long stretches of coastline. From quiet beaches to surfing spots, there’s something for everyone. When you're not on shift, you’ll have free time to explore the region, relax at the beach, or socialise with your fellow volunteers.
Project host
The project is organised by Vive Mexico, a long-standing organisation dedicated to creating meaningful volunteer experiences across the country. Since 2014, they’ve been hosting this successful conservation project in Guayabitos, working with local experts and biologists to protect the region’s sea turtles and raise awareness in the local community.
Their work has already produced great results—and by joining this project, you’ll be part of that ongoing success story.
