The project
Volunteers will work with Italian-speaking children aged 6 to 13 at a village summer camp from Monday to Friday. The camp will focus on the theme of peace in different countries, ending with a final presentation and show prepared together with the children.
International volunteers will be supported by a local volunteer team providing translation, but flexibility and willingness to communicate creatively are encouraged. Volunteers are invited to enrich the cultural exchange by discussing peace and conflict in their own countries’ histories, and by teaching the children traditional songs, dances, or games.
Once a week, volunteers will also visit a retirement home to present their cultures and countries, building intergenerational connections within the community.
An alternative weekly activity may take place in a protected natural area, where volunteers will help cut bamboo to protect endemic vegetation.
In addition, some local families will host volunteers for home dinners, offering a unique opportunity to experience Italian daily life and hospitality.
Accommodation & food
Volunteers will stay in an ancient building currently under restoration. Accommodation includes shared bedrooms with 4 to 6 beds per room, communal bathrooms with hot showers, and a kitchen.
Volunteers are responsible for cooking and cleaning duties, except for weekday lunches, which will be shared with the children at the summer camp (pasta meals provided). Food supplies are provided by the host organisation.
Volunteers must bring their own sleeping bag (or bed sheets), pillowcase, and towels.
Location & leisure
Carignano is a small town of around 9,000 inhabitants, located in the Piedmont countryside on the left bank of the Po River, about 20 km from Turin. It lies within the River Regional Park and features a charming historic centre with medieval archways and a baroque cathedral.
The surrounding region offers a rich mix of architectural heritage and natural beauty. In their free time, volunteers can explore Carignano’s open market, join local events, or relax in the peaceful countryside atmosphere.
On weekends, the group will have the chance to visit Turin, with highlights such as the Egyptian Museum, the Cinema Museum, the MAO Museum of Oriental Art, and the elegant Savoyard city centre.
Please note that free-time activity costs are not covered by the project.
Project host
The camp is organised by Lunaria in collaboration with Giovani Insieme, a youth association founded in Carignano in 1998.
The organisation is run by young people for young people, with the aim of protecting and promoting the town’s artistic, historical, architectural, and environmental heritage through international summer work camps for volunteers from across Europe.
