The project

The main goal of the camp is to support the conservation and ecological restoration of the Sils wetlands, a valuable Mediterranean habitat. Volunteers will:

  1. Help conserve and improve the Natural Area of Sils wetlands.

  2. Learn about local biodiversity and wetland ecosystems.

  3. Discover sustainable land stewardship practices and meet the local actors involved.

  4. Promote environmental values and cooperation.

  5. Share and explore participants’ environmental perspectives from around the world.

  6. Encourage responsible consumption and digital wellbeing.

  7. Become ambassadors for wetland conservation.

  8. Immerse themselves in Catalan culture through shared experiences.

Volunteers will work 6 hours a day, Monday to Friday. In the afternoons and evenings, there will be environmental education sessions, games, cultural workshops, swimming, and time to relax. While the local community won’t take part in the environmental work, they will join some cultural activities like traditional dance and astronomy sessions.

Accommodation & food

Volunteers will stay in a large community space called Sala Cultural de La Laguna, right next to the Sils wetlands. Everyone will sleep together in a shared hall with access to separate gendered toilets and showers. The site includes a kitchen, common spaces, and Wi-Fi. Clothes will be washed by hand.

Participants will be grouped and take turns cooking. Meals will be primarily vegetarian, with little to no meat or fish. Fresh and organic ingredients will be used wherever possible. Five meals will be provided daily:

  • Breakfast

  • Mid-morning snack (usually fruit)

  • Lunch

  • Afternoon snack

  • Dinner

Allergies, intolerances, and dietary needs (including vegan and vegetarian diets) are fully respected, please let us know at registration.

Project host

The project is run by the Emys Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation of wetlands and their native terrapin species, Emys orbicularis. Founded by a group of passionate young conservationists, Emys works to protect nature through land stewardship, education, scientific research, and community engagement. Their team includes university researchers and environmental technicians working with leading universities and ecological institutions across Spain.
