The project
This group volunteering project takes place in the Special Nature Reserve Kraljevac, a protected area known for floating lake islands, relic plant species, and rich birdlife including Purple Herons, Little Bitterns, and Marsh Harriers.
The goal of the project is to help maintain and protect this unique ecosystem. Volunteers will work alongside local conservation teams to support habitat preservation and ensure the long-term health of the reserve for wildlife and surrounding communities.
Volunteers will take part in hands-on conservation tasks including:
Removing invasive or harmful plant species
Maintaining footpaths and access routes
Supporting upkeep of fishermen’s areas
General work to protect the reserve’s landscape, flora, and fauna
You’ll gain practical environmental skills, learn about Serbia’s protected ecosystems, and contribute to a long-running conservation mission.
The host organisation, Young Researchers of Serbia, also work with several other sites across Serbia. We'd be happy to work with you to find alternatives if this location isn't available during your chosen dates, or if you'd like to explore other parts of this beautiful and diverse country.
Accommodation & food
Volunteers will stay in local accommodation in Deliblato. Rooms are simple but comfortable (and proudly described by the hosts as “first class!”). Shared areas are spacious, and volunteers have separate sleeping rooms.
Meals are provided and will include typical Serbian home cooking. Vegetarian options are available.
Location & leisure
The project takes place in Deliblato, around one hour from Belgrade, within the region known for the Deliblato Sands, sometimes called “the largest desert in Europe”.
Free-time activities and group excursions may include:
Boat trips on Lake Kraljevac (and swimming for the brave!)
Hiking in the Deliblato Sands region
Visiting Belgrade: museums, fortress, parks, cafés, historic neighbourhoods
Visiting Smederevo, home to one of Europe’s largest medieval fortresses
Sports, games, cultural exchanges, and time with local community members
Optional recommendations across Serbia (for before/after the project) include Novi Sad, Subotica, Sremski Karlovci, Tara National Park, the Danube Gorge, and more.
Project host
The project is organised by Young Researchers of Serbia (YRS), a long-standing partner committed to environmental protection, youth engagement, and international volunteer exchange.
