The project
As a volunteer, you will assist with mandarin farming, which is the main activity in this project. Tasks will depend on the season but generally include:
Harvesting mandarin fruits
Taking care of the trees
Cutting grass and other seasonal tasks (especially challenging between November and April)
Supporting the local youth club and creating activities to engage the town's residents.
You will also learn about organic farming techniques and contribute to the revitalisation of the local community.
Accommodation & food
You will stay in a shared room at a traditional Japanese-style house. Male and female volunteers will be separated. Volunteers are responsible for cooking their meals, giving you the opportunity to experience local cuisine and practice your cooking skills.
Location & leisure
Ikata is located on the edge of the Sata Peninsula, surrounded by the sea, with fishing being a popular local activity. The village has only 30 houses, creating a close-knit, tranquil environment.
The climate is relatively warm, though it can get cold in winter.
Volunteers can join local events and explore the town's rich culture, learning local wisdom along the way.
There are opportunities for sightseeing, including visits to hot springs and other famous local attractions.
Project host
This project is organised in collaboration with the Kikuya Community Group (KCG), which has been working on revitalising the village since 2008. KCG was formed by local young people who are passionate about the future of their small village.
Ikata's main industry is mandarin farming, but the village is facing challenges such as depopulation, a lack of workers, and an aging society, which has led to abandoned farms and the loss of local traditions. KCG hopes to engage international volunteers to help animate the town and revive its agricultural heritage.
