The project

As a volunteer, your main tasks will include:

  1. Management and harvesting of organic vegetables and rice, including pesticide-free agricultural practices.

  2. Crop production in terraced rice paddies, contributing to the revitalisation of traditional farming methods.

  3. Restoration of deserted terraced rice paddies and abandoned farmland, helping return the land to productive use.

  4. Planning and management of events to promote organic farming and raise awareness in the local community.

This project is a wonderful opportunity to gain hands-on experience in organic farming while contributing to the environmental and social revitalisation of rural Japan.

Accommodation & food

Volunteers will stay in a traditional Japanese house next to the local host's property, with the following:

  • Shared facilities: The kitchen and shower are shared with the local host.

  • Food: Volunteers will cook for themselves, experiencing local ingredients and cuisine.

  • Pets: The house is home to a cat and dog.

  • Smoking: Smoking is not allowed in the accommodation.

Location & leisure

Located in Gose city, Nara Prefecture, approximately 50 km southeast of Osaka, this area is surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery and offers a peaceful rural setting.

Leisure activities: Volunteers can enjoy local events, learn about traditional farming wisdom, and take short trips to hot springs, temples, and shrines.

Project host

This project is organised in partnership with Sugiura Farm, an organic farm established in 2017.

  • Project focus: Sugiura Farm works to promote food safety, an environmentally friendly society, and the conservation of traditional farming landscapes.

  • About the host: Mr. Sugiura, the owner of the farm, manages 2 hectares of land that was once abandoned by local farmers who could no longer work due to age. Mr. Sugiura is involved in all aspects of farming, from crop cultivation to processing and fertiliser production. His efforts aim not only to grow crops but also to conserve the environment and preserve the beauty of rural Japan’s living landscapes.
