Group Volunteering Abroad

The project

This project supports local organic farmers, raising awareness about organic farming, fair trade, and environmental preservation. Volunteers will develop agricultural skills and contribute to local efforts in promoting organic and fair-trade products.

As a volunteer, you’ll engage in various activities, including:

  • Assisting with agriculture on local organic farms.

  • Gardening at the Urban Garden (Horta Urbana de Amarante).

  • Cleaning riverbanks.

  • Organising climate actions and challenges.

  • Promoting local, organic, and fair trade products.

Accommodation & food

You’ll stay in shared rooms (4 participants per room) at Casa da Juventude de Amarante, a youth centre located in the city centre, just 10 minutes' walk from the bus station. The centre is equipped with a kitchen, WC, showers, and offers meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) focused on healthy, organic, and vegetarian ingredients. Participants should bring a sleeping bag. Laundry facilities and free Wi-Fi are available.

Location & leisure

Amarante is a picturesque town in northern Portugal, within the Porto district, known for its tourism, culture, and wine production. It’s located 60 km from Porto, near the Oporto wine region, and is crossed by the Tâmega River. The town is well-connected by public transport and lies in the valley of the Marão mountain range.

Project host

The Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth, IP (IPDJ) is a charity with the mission of implementing an integrated and decentralised policy for the areas of sport and youth, in close collaboration with public and private entities, namely with sports organisations, youth and student associations and local authorities, such as clubs, farms, and youth centres.
