Why International Volunteering Matters
In today’s globalised world, it’s more important than ever that young people are exposed to other cultures and are given opportunities to learn and grow in a supportive environment. Concordia UK has been supporting young people to volunteer overseas, so we’ve seen firsthand the transformational effect that international volunteering can have, and how it can open up possibilities you or your teenager may never have thought possible.

Personal Growth
Volunteering overseas is a fantastic way for young people to build their independence and grow their confidence. Concordia’s vetted international projects are the perfect way for young people to embark on a new adventure and learn to stand on their own two feet within a controlled setting and with access to any support they might need. They will work on their problem-solving and adaptability alongside other young people from all around the world.
Career and Academic Advantages
It’s getting harder and harder to stand out from the crowd when applying to universities or looking for a job. Completing an international volunteering project is a great way to boost a CV or personal statement, and gives young people plenty to talk about during interviews. Your teenager will be able to demonstrate their initiative, teamwork, and global awareness – exactly the sort of real-world experience employers and admission officers are looking for.
Cultural Awareness
Volunteering overseas has the added benefit of increasing your teenager's cultural awareness. By working with other international volunteers, young people can develop their communication skills whilst making friends for life. Many of Concordia's young volunteers come home having had life-changing experiences that set them up for the future.
Mental Health and Wellbeing
What better way to unwind after a stressful exam season than to spend the summer contributing to a meaningful cause with new friends from around the world. Volunteering has been shown to reduce stress and improve mental health by providing a sense of purpose and belonging. This is particularly important during transitional stages of life, and international volunteering is the “perfect coming of age” experience that can set your teenage up for their next steps into adulthood.
Building lifelong friendships
Many of Concordia’s volunteers come home having made lasting friendships with peers from around the world. In fact, one of Concordia’s trustees met their wife whilst volunteering with Concordia a couple of decades ago! Away from screens, these friendships are founded on real-world interactions, shared passion and working together, the perfect recipe for lifelong friendship.
Making a real impact
Volunteering internationally allows young people to contribute to causes they care about, from climate change to education. With so much going on in the world, supporting your teenager to take proactive action and play a part in shaping the world they’ll one day lead is a great investment into their future. As Concordia only partners with local community-led projects, your young person will know their work is truly valued and has a real-world impact.
International volunteering is more than just a trip abroad, it’s a powerful way for young people to grow, connect, and make a real difference. From building confidence to gaining global awareness, the benefits last far beyond the project itself. At Concordia UK, we’re here to help your teenager take that first step.
