The project
Join this unique volunteering opportunity to help preserve a UNESCO-recognised heritage, the art of dry stone construction. You'll support vital restoration work in the vineyards of Subirats, a rural region steeped in wine-growing history and surrounded by natural beauty.
Volunteers will take part in hands-on outdoor conservation work, including:
Rebuilding dry stone vineyard walls and a shepherd’s hut
Restoring remnants of Civil War trenches to improve visitor access
Locating dry stone structures via the Wikipedra digital archive
Light community tasks like maintaining parks and benches
Building and placing nesting boxes for birds
All work is supervised and adapted to weather conditions to ensure safe and enjoyable participation.
Accommodation & food
You’ll stay in a shared space within a local school centre, with bunk beds, hot showers, kitchen, and access to a swimming pool. Expect communal living, with all volunteers sharing one room (no gender separation). Meals are provided by caterers, with vegetarian, vegan, and allergy-friendly options available. Snacks and fruit will also be offered during work breaks.
Location & leisure
Each day offers chances to learn about Catalan life and bond with other volunteers. Activities include:
Cultural workshops and vineyard traditions
Excursions to local museums and wine cellars
A day trip to Barcelona
Joining rehearsals of “castellers” – a traditional human tower team
